The Ultimate Android OEM Guide: Preventing Aggressive Battery Killers

How custom Android skins kill alarms, why WakeArena uses AlarmManager.setAlarmClock(), and how to unlock "Allow restricted settings" on Android 13 & 14+.

1. The Problem: How Android OEMs Kill Background Alarms

Modern smartphone manufacturers (Xiaomi, Samsung, OnePlus, Vivo, Realme, Oppo) modify Android with aggressive proprietary battery managers. While standard Android honors system alarms, OEM skins frequently force-stop background processes, terminate active services, and freeze alarms to artificially inflate battery life figures.

When an alarm app relies on a standard background timer or unprivileged worker, the system may delay the trigger by 10 to 45 minutes—or suppress it completely until you manually unlock your phone screen.

2. How WakeArena Fights Back: System-Level Clearance

To ensure your wake-up alarm triggers precisely on the exact second you set it, WakeArena implements Android's highest-priority scheduling APIs:

However, if the OEM kills WakeArena's auto-start or full-screen overlay privileges, the system may block the alarm from opening over the lock screen. Follow the device-specific instructions below to grant permanent clearance.

3. Android 13 & 14+: Unlocking "Allow Restricted Settings"

On Android 13 (Tiramisu) and Android 14+, Google introduced an enhanced security sandbox. When you attempt to enable Accessibility Service or Notification Listener for apps installed outside primary storefronts or undergoing specific permissions, the system greys out the option with an alert: "Restricted setting: For your security, this setting is currently unavailable."

If you encounter this banner, follow these exact system steps to unlock permissions for WakeArena:

  1. Open your phone's Settings app.
  2. Navigate to Apps (or App Management > See all apps).
  3. Scroll down and tap WakeArena from the app list.
  4. In the top-right corner of the WakeArena App Info screen, tap the three vertical dots menu (⋮).
  5. Tap "Allow restricted settings".
  6. Authenticate with your device lock (Fingerprint, Face Unlock, or PIN). A confirmation toast will say "Restricted settings allowed for WakeArena".
  7. Now return to WakeArena or open phone Accessibility settings. The permission toggles will be fully active and clickable. Toggle the permission to ON.
Note: The three-dot menu only appears after Android has presented the "Restricted setting" dialog at least once. If you do not see the three dots, open Accessibility settings first, tap WakeArena to trigger the dialog, and then return to App Info.

4. Step-by-Step OEM Configuration Instructions

1. Xiaomi / POCO / Redmi (MIUI & HyperOS)

Xiaomi devices have the most aggressive memory cleaner in Android. Apply all 4 settings:

  • Autostart: Settings > Apps > Permissions > Autostart > Enable WakeArena. (In HyperOS: Settings > Apps > Background Autostart > Turn ON).
  • Battery Saver: Settings > Apps > Manage Apps > WakeArena > Battery saver > Select No restrictions.
  • Display pop-up windows while running in background: Settings > Apps > Manage Apps > WakeArena > Other permissions > Enable "Display pop-up windows while running in background" and "Show on Lock screen".
  • Lock in Recent Apps: Open Recent Apps screen, long-press on WakeArena, and tap the Padlock icon so it is never cleared on memory purge.

2. Samsung Galaxy (One UI)

Samsung's One UI automatically puts apps to sleep if not opened daily unless excluded:

  • Battery Unrestricted: Settings > Apps > WakeArena > Battery > Select Unrestricted.
  • Never Sleeping Apps: Settings > Battery > Background usage limits > Never sleeping apps > Tap + > Add WakeArena.
  • Appear on Top: Settings > Apps > WakeArena > Appear on top > Enable Allowed.

3. OnePlus, Oppo & Realme (OxygenOS & ColorOS)

  • Auto-launch: Settings > Apps > Auto-launch > Enable WakeArena.
  • Battery Optimization: Settings > Battery > More settings > Optimize battery use > WakeArena > Select Don't optimize.
  • Background Activity: Settings > Apps > App management > WakeArena > Battery usage > Enable "Allow background activity" and "Allow auto-launch".

4. Vivo & iQOO (Funtouch OS / OriginOS)

  • Autostart: Settings > Applications & permissions > Permission management > Autostart > Enable WakeArena.
  • High Background Power Consumption: Settings > Battery > Background power consumption management > WakeArena > Select Don't restrict background power consumption.
  • Lock in Recent Apps: Swipe up to recent apps, drag down on the WakeArena card, and tap the Lock icon.

5. How to Test Your Configuration

After adjusting these settings on your smartphone, perform a quick 3-minute test:

  1. Set an alarm in WakeArena for 3 minutes from now.
  2. Lock your phone screen with the hardware power button.
  3. Leave the device completely untouched on your table.
  4. Confirm that the screen turns on automatically, the alarm sounds at full set volume, and the ring screen overlay appears over your lock screen.
